I joined the University of Florida in fall 2004. I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced Swahili language and literature courses. My current research is centered around issues of identity formation in the African female Bildungsroman. I focus on texts written in both English and Swahili languages. My other interests include comparative literature, African literature and cultures, children's literature, women studies, and translation.
